Artemis Fowl

Note: This article was used for my review task a few months ago.

By Eoin Colfer

About the book:
This book revolves around a genius 12-year-old boy call Artemis Fowl. In order to restore his family’ fortune [that was lost by coka cola] fast and furious, he hatched a scheme . If his dangerous scheme of stealing gold from the underground fairies succeeded , the history of human mankind [provided that one day that human knows the existence of fairies] will be rewritten and he will be a curse to LEP as long as he lives. Of course let us not forget the amount of gold he will be getting. His so call “evil plan” is to get his hands on the fairy book , containing history and secrets of the civilisation but unfortunately written in Gnommish, unintelligible using normal human language. Oh yeah, he is going to kidnap a fairy too. Impossible? Read to find out how clever the guy is or how furious LEP was.

What Leanne thinks about this book:

I think the book is extremely entertaining, even though I thought of the book as being too “science-fiction” the moment I looked at the synopsis and also the book cover. I changed my mind the moment I started reading the first chapter, with all the excitement going on , it is hardly what I had expected after reading the cover.

I love the character of Holly Short, she is someone that I find her ancient in my modern world full of gender equal statements. Her job is like no other from any of us, somewhat similar to police or in American language “FBI”. On earth’s surface, jobs that once belonged to fields of men have opened their doors today pilots, doctors, professors, ect. In the story she is still trying to do something unusual for a girl with her boss breathing down her neck, treating her unequally. I felt so relieved in the end when I read about how her boss truly thinks about her.

After reading the book, I figured out the reason behind its popularity. The book is set on fantasy and also bits of sad reality , it was also the same reason why Harry Potter was so popular among the “mud people”. Fantasy. Something that that we are losing in this world full of computer games. The ability to think creatively. I also find this book questioning the existence of creatures that we believed to have been created from fantasy long time ago,do they really exists?

Twilight Saga V.S Harry Potter.

Twilight Saga V.S Harry Potter. Part ONE.

Note : This article is PURELY on my point on view. No offence is meant.

Well, I shouldn’t be having this conversation @ all. Because they are both equally nice.
I am BOTH a twilight fan and a Harry potter fan. Kudos to both Stephanie Meyer and J.K Rowling for providing us with fantasies that we have ever imagined.

The difference between them is VAST.

Harry Potter is the most complicated series that i have ever read in my life, even though i still have a long life well ahead of me. Although the first book came out when I am still 2, the years that I have spent idling in my childhood never affected the Harry Potter Spirit. I remember when I was 7 or 8 , the first movie came out on theatres. My dad brought the DVD and I stared @ the movie. Without understanding any part of it. My first attempt at Harry Potter was quite a few year later and the memories were vivid. I once marvelled at the“simplicity“ the plot, it was like the characters was still living. I would never forgot every time there was a surprise. I can do a character analysis of each and every one of the characters and still be not contented on the information that was given in the entire series. The thirst for more is unquenchable. There is always room for more curiosity.

Twilight Saga on the other hand , belongs to the slightly romance cum fantasy genre. It is perhaps the first of the genre to break out of the shell. I have read many romance book from Korea, China ,Taiwan and I never fails to predict the plot. Simple, because the plot is so predictable as that there is school tomorrow.
I used to spend hours in trying to figure out how did Twilight attracted me. Then I realise is the movie. Well, I wasn’t the typical book fan that will rush to the bookstore to buy new books every other fan. I sort of wait it out, see if there is any REAL fan talking about it all the time that the book is VERY nice. Then I buy. In this case , I waited and waited. There was a few of my classmates reading the series though they did not talk about it a lot. So I thought it was the usual rush for new books. Then I realised I was wrong. So wrong that I went for the movies first then the book. The movie can be described in a single phrase .Lack of information. My urge for information rose and the fan mania started.

Of course there will be similaries in the two best sellers. Well, they both belongs to the fantasy genre. To be slightly more specific, the two ideas came from ancient times. First, both witches and Wizards and vampires and werewolves are totally the monsters that humans “tried” to kill many centuries ago. Second, we don’t believe in them any more. Until perhaps when the books came out and fans rushed to buy them.

- end of part 1 , to be continued/
